Deutsche Telekom Selects ILOG Visualization Components for International Telephone Traffic System
Intuitive GUI of New Network Management System To Be Powered by ILOG
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - July 13, 1999 - Advanced visualization components from
ILOG (NASDAQ: ILOG, EURO.NM: ILOG), the world's leading supplier of software
components, have been selected by Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT) to power the
graphical user interface (GUI) of the new network management solution for its
international switching systems. The third-largest telecommunications carrier in the world
and the largest in Europe, Deutsche Telekom will embed ILOG TGO (Telecom Graphic
Objects) and ILOG Views components as the core of the system's 250-window GUI in
order to save development time and assure a high level of performance and
standardization.
The management system -- Management Technik Ausland (MTA) -- was developed by
Deutsche Telekom's southwest development center and will soon be managing the traffic
of 10 international switches through 50 Windows NT clients in six supervision centers in
Germany. Using ILOG TGO and ILOG Views enabled the center to quickly develop 250
different windows for key functions such as traffic monitoring, administration and
reports.
"We chose ILOG TGO because we strongly believe it will become the de facto standard
for network management GUIs," said Klaus Schmitt, manager of the TMN business unit
at Deutsche Telekom Development Center Southwest. "This product gives both us and
equipment manufacturers a way to use common development components, ensuring a
consistent look and feel for our management systems."
The ambitious MTA project involved 40 developers and resulted in a comprehensive,
distributed system with a three-tiered architecture based on CORBA middleware and the
HP OpenView platform. The powered-by-ILOG GUI is at the presentation layer.
MTA aims at delivering the right information to improve service quality. MTA's
important function is to survey and analyze telephone traffic that flows throughout the
international switches. It takes into account specific switch characteristics such as
service- and carrier-dependent routing in multi-carrier environments.
With MTA, traffic alarms can be handled in real time and customized reports can be
produced for back-office operations. The use of data is maximized to identify bottlenecks
and improve traffic routing. Thresholds can be dynamically activated and modified to set
up traffic alarm levels that tell, destination by destination, whether the number of
connections is sufficient for the number of calls.
"A GUI made with ILOG TGO is quite distinctive and user friendly," Schmitt explained.
"Human factors studies in telecom have given it a unique look and feel. Alarms stand out
distinctly and network elements appear in fine relief. The ILOG Views engine provides
by far the highest performance for displaying graphics."
ILOG TGO (Telecom Graphic Objects) is the first component dedicated to displaying
telecommunications networks and equipment. Based on ILOG's recognized expertise in
graphic software technology and close collaboration with top design laboratories in
telecommunication, the intuitive ILOG TGO GUI allows telecom operators to supervise
networks more effectively.
An add-on module to the widely deployed ILOG Views graphics library, ILOG TGO
provides up to 85 percent of the code for developing telecom GUIs. Applications built
with it are more powerful, have faster time-to-market and less costly overall than
applications based on non-dedicated visualization components. Telecommunications
companies that have used ILOG TGO-based user interfaces agree that they are more
intuitive, friendly, and ultimately reduce human errors. The component also comes in a
100 percent Pure Java version, ILOG JTGO, for web-based network management
systems.
