Metro De Madrid Deploys ILOG Technology to Enhance Service And Improve Operational Efficiency
ILOG Software Streamlines Workforce and Terminal Management Operations
MADRID -- June 25, 2003 - ILOG (NASDAQ: ILOG; Euronext SICOVAM: 006673), a leading provider of enterprise-class software components, announced today that Metro de Madrid, Madrid's Metropolitan railway system, has deployed ILOG software to improve resource management, enhance the quality and speed of decision making, and achieve greater operational efficiency. Deployed as key components of new real-time supervision and optimized personnel scheduling systems, ILOG software helps ensure that the 565 million passengers that the metro serves annually benefit from a more responsive transportation service and better-managed operations.
Using ILOG Solver optimization component for scheduling and ILOG Views real-time visualization component for supervision, Metro de Madrid has optimized two core business operations: staff assignment, and the management of train depots and lines. As a result, the metro has made significant efficiency gains in staff scheduling and train management. These gains benefit Metro de Madrid staff as well, since the new schedules can accommodate employee preferences. Meanwhile, the enhanced ability provided by the ILOG-based system to display real-time operational data to system operators enables the system not only to develop traffic plans faster and provide advance notice of traffic status to riders, but also to react faster to exception conditions, delivering higher levels of customer satisfaction.
"The flexibility and real-time performance of ILOG software bring significant efficiency improvements to Metro de Madrid operations by allowing us to react more quickly to changes, " said Fernando Gomez, manager of the Information Technology Center of Metro de Madrid. "First, it allows operators to both supervise and manage trains in real-time with enhanced decision-making capabilities. Second, staff assignments are automated, creating a considerably smoother and faster process. Overall, we consider ILOG technology a key strategic asset since well-run operations allow us to focus on our primary mission -- serving our customers."
Higher Flexibility in Staff Assignment
Metro de Madrid based its scheduling system on ILOG Solver to optimize scheduling of available staff, taking into account the large number of rules and constraints involved in the company's labor policies (acquired rights, shifts, breaks, union agreements, etc.), industry regulations, and all the variables that have an impact on demand forecasting, such as weather conditions, vacations, breakdowns, seasonal variations, cultural and sporting events, etc.
Centralized and Powerful Train Depot and Line Supervision
The depot and line management system is the core of Metro de Madrid's IT operations system. Using ILOG's advanced graphical displays, system operators can now manage in real-time a large quantity and variety of data in a readable format, allowing them to better localize trains and respond to any unexpected situation or breakdown more quickly. Using the system, operators located at the Metro's 100 operator workstations can see the same screen and execute more than 150 operations with simple mouse clicks.
The Metro de Madrid system is the latest example of the wide deployment of ILOG software by Europe's leading passenger rail systems. RENFE (Spanish railways), SNCF (French railways), Deutsche Bahn (German railways), NS (Dutch railways) and RFI (Italian railways) also use ILOG software with proven benefits ranging from better on-time train performance to enhanced passenger safety and efficiency. Light rail systems built by Siemens, Ansaldo Signal and GE Transportation Systems have also used ILOG technology for supervision applications in many cities throughout the world. ILOG's software has also been deployed to manage metro train scheduling for Madrid's sister city of Bilbao.
